Wangfujing Street in Beijing


The word Beijing literally means "Northern capital", in line with the common East Asian tradition whereby all the capital cities are explicitly named as such. Peking is the name of the city according to Chinese Postal Map Romanization and the traditional customary name is Beijing in English. The term originated with French missionaries four hundred years ago and corresponds to an older pronunciation predating a subsequent sound change in Mandarin. This city is considered to be a perfect place for spending a holiday. There is something for everyone here. Among the several places of tourist sites, the Wangfujing Street in Beijing stands tall as one of the most well known places of the city.

Wangfujing Street in Beijing is a seven hundred-year-old commercial street that houses a wide variety of shops and boutiques where you can find all kinds of commodities including world-famous brands. The Oriental Plaza is the biggest store in Wangfujing.

Besides modern department stores, there are many Foreign Language Bookstores in this area. The Old-Beijing-Street is now seated underground, which was built and decorated in Ming and Qing style. The outstanding characteristic of Wangfujing Street of Beijing are its centralized well-known longstanding stores selling caps, silk cloth, shoes, scissors, and ink-stick, jade articles, Chinese brushes tea, desserts, roast ducks, pickled vegetables and so on. The most popular sites for souvenir photos are the sculptures on both street sides, reflecting life of old Beijing.

Wangfujing Street in Beijing is now considered as the central heart of the city. Certainly from Wangfujing all the areas of Beijing are easily accessible. Wangfujing is a fairly long street and a walk from end to end would take a traveler about half an hour.

At night, the Wangfujing Street in Beijing wears an even more fascinating and enchanting shade. There is an ever increasing number of neon advertising signs, that attract even more crowds flock to soak up the atmosphere. One might just be fooled in to believing that they are in some really well known city that is eternally lit up by various hues of neon. Most shops stay open till around 9pm and sometimes an impromptu night market is seen.
