The
Banyan Temple Guangzhou was built in 537 AD. There
are six Banyan Temples on the Liu Rong Road. It is a
renowned Buddhist cultural site. Three large Buddhist
statues are enshrined in the temple. Guangdong province
houses the biggest copper Buddhist statues.
The thousand-Buddha copper pillar cast in the Yuan
Dynasty (1271-1368) is kept on the top story of the
pagoda. The pagoda is 184 feet in length. It has nine
stories, featuring 17 levels. The designs are intricate
and don bright colors. It is because of the colorful
exterior carvings, that this structure is popularly
known as the Flower Pagoda.
Among the Chinese, the temple is known as Liu Rong
Temple. It was initially called the Baozhuangyan Temple.
The temple was built during the Five Dynasties period
(907-960). The temple is situated in the heart of the
city. It was rechristened in the Ming Dynasty between
1368 and 1644 as Six Banyan Temple. Su Shi, an eminent
writer of the Northern Song Dynasty who lived from 960
to 1127, had written on the two characters of Liu Rong
when he saw the six ancient banyan trees on a visit
to the temple. He renamed it as Banyan Temple Guangzhou.
The Banyan Temple Guangzhou
is a famous temple and is one of the most popular Hindu
temples in the world. Thousands of devotees flock to
this temple every year. The temple remains open from
8.30 to 17.00 hours. A person is allowed to stay up
to one hour in this temple.
Banyan Temple Guangzhou has the following features:
- Tianwang Hall in Six Banyan Temple in Guangzhou
houses the Laughing Buddha.
- There is the Six Banyan Pagoda
or Flowery Pagoda insside the temple.
- The Six Banyan Pagoda consists of Buddhist relics
and displays splendid architectural designs with curved
roofs and the tip built like stamens.
- Daxiong Baodian Hall has three copper Buddhist
statues with Sakyamuni in the middle, Amitabha on the
left and the Apothecary Buddha on the right
- During Chinese traditional Spring Festival and
Lantern Festival, joss sticks are burnt by numerous
devotees.
